The beginning of the semester was devoted to the study of the “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West that culminated in 9/11 (Texts such as: Samuel Hunnington, Bernard Lewis, and Sayed Qutb). The second part of the semester delves more deeply on thereligious and cultural divisions between the East and the West. Doom Tree of Wad Hamedshows how modernity can be opposed to tradition and vice versa. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the creation of the Taliban in Central Asia shed more light on the West’s involvement in Muslim countries. Also, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinecontinues to widen the division between Muslim and Non-Muslim cultures. As a consequence of these tensions, Islamophobia, demonization of Islam, Muslim anger toward the West have become everyday news.
