DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
AND CHARTS
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
DEFINITIONS
• Descriptive Statistics – summary of a data set.
• Charts – visual representation of the data set for the group.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICAL FUNCTIONS
• Central Tendency – a way to describe the set of data.
• arithmetic mean: sum of a list of numbers divided by the number of numbers in the list.
• Excel uses this function to find the arithmetic mean: =AVERAGE().
• median: midpoint =MEDIAN().
• first QUARTILE.INC and third QUARTILE.INC : = Quartile(). Quartiles in statistics are values that
divide your data into quarters.

An inclusive range of numbers includes all of the numbers in the data set

An exclusive does not use the minimum and maximum numbers.
• Range: Max – Min = Range The range in statistics is a measure of spread.
• Interquartile range: The IQR is the “interquartile range” of a data set.
• Standard deviation: =STDEV() the standard deviation is the spread of numbers from the means on the
bell curve.

STDEV.S calculates the spread from the means for a sample target population.

STDEV.P calculates the spread from the means for an entire target population.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICAL FUNCTIONS,
CON’T
• Variance: =VAR() is equal to the square of the standard deviation for the
spread from the means.
• VAR.S calculates the spread from the means for a sample population.
• VAR.S calculates the spread from the means for an entire sample population.
• Coefficient of variation: compares the spread of data sets that have different
units or different means. = (SD/Mean)*100.
FREQUENCY TABLE
• Frequency table helps us display tally of numerous data observations on
various categories.
• Need bins:
• Decide on the number of bins.
• Max – min = whole number.
• Whole/bins= interval.
CHARTS
BAR CHART
• Visual representation of the frequency distribution.
• Bar Chart: include bins and frequencies.
PIE CHART
• Shows frequencies and/or percentages.
HISTOGRAM
• Frequency distribution.
• Create bins.
• (Max – Min)/number of required bins = space within the bins.
• Bin Intervals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HofOMf8RgjM
• No gaps between bars.

Pivot Tables
Pivot Tables
• Pivot tables are one of Excel’s most powerful
features. A pivot table allows you to extract the
significance from a large, detailed data set.
• The data set can consist of hundreds or
thousands of records and multiple fields.
• Pivot tables help you organize it by your needs
• It is a method of organizing raw data into
contingency tables with values.
2
Pivot Tables
A pivot table is a program tool that allows you to
reorganize and summarize selected columns and rows
of data in a spreadsheet or database table to obtain a
desired report. A pivot table doesn’t actually change
the spreadsheet or database itself.
3
Pivot Tables in Excel
• To create a PivotTable:
• Select the table or cells (including column
headers) containing the data you want to
use.
• From the Insert tab, click PivotTable
• In Create PivotTable dialog box select the
data and the location of the output
• A blank PivotTable and Field List will
appear on a new worksheet.
4
Pivot Tables
• Now select fields, filters, totals, etc.
• Playing with it is the best way to learn it

MGMT 650 Summer 2019
Week 2 Homework
(Last updated 3/18/19)
Create a spreadsheet that automatically calculates your grade in this class as you enter the grades that you receive.
It should include: 1) the weights of each graded assignment, 2) your grade in each assignment,
and 3) your final grade. Be sure to label everything: such as the places where the information,
is stored; the names of each assignment; and where to add the actual grades that you receive.
Make this sheet user friendly; especially for users that see the sheet for the first time.
To use this for your benefit, you may want to design it so that it can be used to calculate your interim grade
before you have all the grades. After this week, you will receive the solution from your professor
and you will be able to use your solution or our solution for future classes.
